While several important composers drew inspiration from it, Franz Liszt seems to have had a particularly close relationship with Goethe’s masterpiece. He came up with the idea of a symphony ‘in three characteristic pictures’, each devoted to a key character in the play: Faust, Gretchen and Mephistopheles. Rather than telling the story of the play, Liszt composed a psychological exploration of these three main figures. He was also a pioneer in his use of leitmotifs, i.e. short musical ideas that underline a trait of character or evoke feelings, a process that his future son-in-law, Richard Wagner, would take even further in his operas.
The Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, led by Gergely Madaras, presents the original, purely instrumental version of the Faust Symphony from 1854. This gigantic work is complemented by the first of the Mephisto Waltzes, inspired by Nikolaus Lenau’s vision of the Faust myth. These two works offer two very different perspectives on Liszt’s intense relationship with the character of Faust, and in particular with that of Mephistopheles, around whom many of his compositions are structured. They are key works for understanding Liszt’s aesthetic project and the typical nineteenth-century tendency towards a combination of the arts.

The repertory here is quite suited to Storgårds’ rather precise approach, with strands of the mature Shostakovich style emerging from these early works. Indeed, one major attraction here is the presence of two early Shostakovich Scherzos, the earlier one of which, Op. 1, was composed when he was only 13. It is hard to sort out the future Shostakovich in these pieces, but they are certainly competent orchestral pieces for a teenager. Shostakovich is absolutely recognizable in the Symphony No. 1 in F minor, Op. 10, however. The work was premiered in 1926, and it overflows with melodies of the type that would characterize his symphonies at the end, with a Russian-folkish bent derailed by a certain tense sarcasm. It is an excellent performance of this work, with momentum, precision, and lightness. The BBC Philharmonic also sounds great in the Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 20 (“The First of May”), from 1929; hear the clean string work in the Andante fifth movement and Storgårds’ control over the tricky tempo broadening in the movement before that. This was the only one of Shostakovich’s symphonies that the composer later rejected; as so often with Shostakovich, some have tried to reinterpret this work, but to these ears, with its revolutionary “May Day” choral finale, it sounds like the kind of music Shostakovich would later be forced to write. Nonetheless, Storgårds’ performance is again persuasive; he does not put more into the music than is there. The MediaCity sound is ideal for Storgårds’ readings, which bode well for further entries in his series.

His First Symphony famously took Brahms twenty-one years from conception to first performance – a marker of both his own highly self-critical assessment of his output, combined with the expectation of everyone around him that his symphonic output would naturally pick up where Beethoven had left off. Astonishingly, his Second Symphony was begun in June 1877 and received its first performance just six months later, by the Vienna Philharmonic and Hans Richter. Its cheerful nature and pastoral mood are also a stark contrast to the first symphony. Following a gap of some six years, Brahms returned to the form in 1883, and composed his third and then fourth symphonies in quick succession. Begun in 1884, the Fourth Symphony was premièred by Brahms and the Meiningen court orchestra in October 1885. The work is especially notable for its last movement, which takes the form of a passacaglia (an extremely rare occurrence) and is the only of Brahms’s symphonies to end in a minor key.
